Do Something Unusual Tomorrow

It’s been a long week, and after working late one night, was in need of some comfort food. I ordered up the chinese and settled into the couch in my pjs. I was so exhausted that I forgot to eat my fortune cookie, and just packed it away for lunch the next day. Yesterday I opened it up, and my fortune was “Do Something Unusual Tomorrow”. I taped it to my computer, and hoped that I would be given the opportunity to do something unusual, but really, how unusual are the workdays?

Today has been busy and demanding and i looked down and realized 1:30 had come and gone, and I was still without lunch. So I packed up and headed to a new lunch spot that my girl Kristen recommended. Side note: Atlantans, try Zoe’s Kitchen in the Peachtree Battle shopping center. A-dorable. I sit down at a table, alone, and a few minutes later, the most precious old man (you know I love old men) sat down beside me…also alone. Out of nowhere, I ask him if I can share a table with him. What?! He smiles, and invites me over. Paul, is precious. Our conversation goes from his days at Emory, to his excitement about the upcoming football season. He’s a Georgia Fan since his dad was on the football team. His dad was on the first team to play in Sanford Stadium. The team, Yale…and UGA won. In our conversation about growing up in Atlanta, I mention that I’m from Jonesboro. Now, at this point, the girl eating by herself next to us, interrupts us to tell me she graduated from Morrow. Not only that, but we know the same people! She joined our table, and 3 strangers sat and enjoyed lunch.

Once we were finished, Valerie and I exchanged numbers. Paul told us how enjoyable his lunch was. And the we parted ways. I’m not sure if it constitutes “unusual” but it certainly made me smile.

So, my Thursday advice is to share coffee, lunch, a musical recommendation, or a glance with a stranger. You’re only strangers till you meet.
